In the lower margin a Dutch verse and the French translation. Mirror image copy after a print by Cornelis van Dalen (II) from a series of twelve prints. The original series was made after paintings by Joachim Sandrart with the twelve months executed by different engravers.

Medium: Engraving on hand laid (verge) paper. Watermark: Amsterdam coat of arms.

Sheet size: 30.4 x 40.4 cm (11.97 x 15.91 inch). Image size: 25 x 33.8 cm. (9.84 x 13.31 inch).

Condition: good, given age. Light creasing and 2 holesmfrom binding at top and a small hole in bottom margin. 2 Tears in right margin. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Publisher: Gerard Valck. Gerard Valck (1652-1726) was a Dutch engraver, publisher and cartographer. He was the business partner and brother-in-law of Petrus Schenck. He was one of the first publisher to publish (a la poupee) colour prints.

Biography artist: Cornelis van Dalen II (1638-1664) was a Dutch engraver born in December 1638 in Amsterdam. He was more gifted than his father, Cornelis van Dalen, and is known for engraving some of the most powerful portraits of his time. He was also a painter, drawer, and print publisher. He worked in Amsterdam from 1655 to 1659. He passed away in 1664.

Joachim von Sandrart (12 May 1606 – 14 October 1688) was a German Baroque art-historian and painter, active in Amsterdam during the Dutch Golden Age. He is most significant for his collection of biographies of Dutch and German artists the Teutsche Academie, published between 1675 and 1680.
