Subject: Antique print, titled: ”Nova Zemla Waygats Straet Nassou […].” – This very rare original antique print / map shows a map of Novaya Zemlya / Nova Zembla. Surrounded by six scenes showing ships, an attack by a polar bear, whale hunting etc.

Condition: Very good, given age. Original fold as issued. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.

Medium: Copperplate engraving / etching. on hand laid (verge) paper.

Description: From: ‘Leeven en daden Der Doorluchtighste Zee-helden En Ontdeckers van Landen, deser eeuwen. Beginnende met Christoffel Colombus (…) by Lambert van den Bos, published in The Netherlands 1676.

Artists and Engravers: Made by ‘Romeyn de Hooghe’ after ‘Lambert van den Bos’. Romeyn de Hooghe (1645-1708) was an important and prolific late Dutch Baroque engraver and caricaturist. De Hooghe was skilled as an etcher, draughtsman, painter, sculptor and medalist. He is best known for political caricatures of Louis XIV and propagandistic prints supporting William of Orange. During his career, de Hooghe produced over 3500 prints. He also illustrated books, and his illustrations can be found in some of the most important texts of his period. Author: Lambert van den Bosch / Bos (Dutch 1610-1698).
