Made by Isidore-Stanislas Helman after Jean-Baptist Le Prince.

Medium: Etching and engraving on hand laid (verge) paper.

Sheet size: 37.5 x 52 cm (14.76 x 20.47 inch). Image size: 34.3 x 49 cm. (13.5 x 19.29 inch).

Condition: good, given age. Slight foxing annd soiling. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Published in Augsburg c. 1776.

Biography engraver: Isidore-Stanislas Helman (1743-1806/1809), was a French draughtsman, engraver and printseller. He was born in Lille in 1743 where he received his early artistic training. His death date is uncertain. He died in Paris in either 1806 or in 1809. In Paris he studied with Jacques-Philippe Le Bas (1707-1783), a draughtsman, engraver and etcher, and was one of his finest pupils. Helman was known especially for his engravings of genre scenes.

Biography artist: Jean-Baptist Le Prince (1734-1781) came from Metz and studied with Boucher in Paris. He stayed in St. Petersburg between 1758 and 1763. After returning to France he etched many Russian scenes. Le Prince is also considered to be the inventor of the aquatint.
