Condition: very good, given age. Trimmed on the platemark, minor backed tear, flattened horizontal fold, light stain in blank corner. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Originally printed in the Speculum Romanae Magnificantiae (The mirror of the splendour of Rome), which was the result of the collaboration between Antonio Salamanca and Antonio Lafreri in the years between 1553-1563, during which they published a large number of prints showing the beauty of ancient and modern Rome. These prints were sold separately to collectors and tourists, but also in albums containing a larger number of prints. After the decease of Lafreri a substantial part of the plates came into the possession of Claudio and Stefano Duchetti, who standardized the production of these albums and added the name of Duchetti to the plates.

State: 4th state (of 4).

Biography engraver: Cornelis Cort (1533?1578), a Flemish engraver known for his detailed depictions of Renaissance and classical themes.

Biography artist: Based on classical Roman artworks, the engraving is emblematic of Renaissance interest in antiquity.
