BACKGROUND INFORMATION

From the series “The Four Elements,” plate 2, representing “Water” through the depiction of a fisherman. Based on the work of Hendrick Goltzius, a Dutch master. The specific artist remains unknown, but the style is consistent with the late 16th century, emphasizing the human figure as an embodiment of natural elements. on an accompanying set Johann Theodor and Johann Israel de Bry are mentioned as the engravers.

Biography artist: Hendrick Goltzius (1558-1617) was one of the most influential Dutch engravers and draftsmen of the late 16th century, celebrated for his technical virtuosity and his ability to imbue prints with dynamic energy. This print is from his famous series, “The Four Elements.”.
