Description

Copperplate etching, engraving and stipple engraving, intaglio print. Original hand colouring, probably heightened with eggwhite containing substance fir shiny impression. Paper: vellin type. on paper.

Size in cm: The overall size is ca. 14.5 x 18.5 cm. The image size is ca. 9 x 15 cm. Size in inch: The overall size is ca. 5.7 x 7.3 inch. The image size is ca. 3.5 x 5.9 inch.

Plate: ‘Saponaria officinalis L. – Officinelles Seifenkraut.’ (common soapwort, bouncing-bet, crow soap, wild sweet William, soapweed.) Two leaves with text (German) included. Exact ed. unknown. This rare and delicate plate originates from: ‘Hand-Atlas sammtlicher medicinisch-pharmaceutischer Gewachse.’, by dr. Wilibald Artus, published in Jena by F. Mauke 1848 and later ed. This botanical work was published for use by pharmacists, doctors and druggists. Although at least 7 editions have been published, all must have appeared in small numbers, as this work is very seldom offered for sale.
