Pieter de Carpentier, Gouverneur Generaal van Nederlands Indien – This rare original antique print shows a portrait of Pieter de Carpentier (1586 – 1659), a Dutch, administrator of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) who served as Governor-General there from 1623 to 1627. The Gulf of Carpentaria in northern Australia is named after him.

From the monumental work by François Valentyn: “Oud en nieuw Oost-Indiën, vervattende een naaukeurige en uitvoerige verhandelinge van Nederlands mogentheyd in die gewesten”. Dordrecht/Amsterdam: J. van Braam en G. onder de Linden, 1724/1726. (Transl.: Old and new East-Indies, including an accurate and extensive description of Dutch / VOC controlled territories.)

Made by an anonymous engraver after Valentijn.

Condition: Good, given age. A few minor crinkles. A few tiny spots. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
