Gouache and watercolour drawing on paper.
Size: c 31.5 x 38.5 cm.
Paper edges a bit chipped and a few small tears. Small interior tear ar right middle.
By James Ferrier Pryde (Edinburgh: 1866-1941), who was a decorated Scottish painter, poster artist and theatrical designer. He studied at the Edinburgh Academy and in Paris at the Academie Julian under William Bouguereau. He co-operated from 1893-1899 on posters with his brother in law Sir William Nicholson (Baggerstaff Brothers). His work was widely put up for exhibition.
In 1902 he worked on a series of gouache drawings in a somber palette called ‘Celebrated Criminals’. This work is from the same year and shows similarities in medium and style.
Provenance: Ex- collection van der Grinten, Kranenburg, Germany. The van der Grinten’s were reknown art collectors.
