Subject: Antique print, titled: ‘Vue Perspective du Pont et de la Ville de Ruremonde dans le Pays Bas. ‘ – This optical print shows the bridge over the river Maas (Meuse) in the city of Roermond, The Netherlands.

Condition: Very good, given age. Scattered small brown spots (also in the image). Remains of attachment to carrier to the rear of the sheet. A wormhole in the left edge of the image. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.

Medium: Etching/engraving, with original hand colouring on hand laid (verge) paper.

Description: original antique print published by Daumont in France ca. 1770. This is an optical print, also called ‘vue optique’ or ‘vue d’optique’, which were made to be viewed through a Zograscope, or other devices of convex lens and mirrors, all of which produced an optical illusion of depth. Optical .

Artists and Engravers: Made by ‘Daumont ‘ after an anonymous artist. Jean-Francois Daumont (fl. 1740-1775) was a well-known publisher of optical prints, wallpaper and popular prints, established in Paris. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries there were many popular speciality establishments in Paris, Augsburg and London which produced optical viewing devices and special engravings to be viewed through them.
