Als Jan de Moff (…) – This original scarce antique print shows an interior of a 17th century poor house with three peasants gathered around a bench, one of them playing a fiddle / violin, the others drinking and smoking, a cat resting at right, a cabinet and a door with an open upper half in background.

Copperplate engraving/etching on hand laid (verge) paper.
Sheet size: 23 x 29,4 cm. Image size: 21,8 x 28,4 cm.

Age: 1647-1686. This state possibly a later ed. Ref: Hollstein Dutch 22-6(6).

Made by Jonas Suyderhoef after Adriaen van Ostade. Jonas Suyderhoef (Dutch; ca. 1613-1686) was a Dutch engraver from Leiden. He worked in Haarlem. He produced highly finished engravings often in collaboration with his tutor Soutman. He specialized mostly in portraits.

Condition: Good, given age. A few small holes in top part of print, probably from previous binding. Small tear top right corner, backed. Light diagonal crease. Very nice dark impression. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
