Colour lithograph on heavy textured paper (to mimic a painting structure) paper.

From the first limited Dutch edition of “Paardenrassen Kunstalbum …”, a portfolio with 41 lithographed plates based on paintings by Otto Eerelman, which depict different breeds of draft horses. The encompanying text descriptions are by E.A.L. Quadekker. The lithographs for this rare luxury portfolio were made by J.L. Goffart. Published by Schillemans & Van Belkum, Zutphen, Netherlands. The exact publishing dat is not clear as the publication probably started from 1898 on in installments of 4 prints. This ed. is superior to smalles size German, French and facsimile editions. This is considered one of the finest horse related works out there, made to showcase horse breeds in the libraries and salons of the well-to-do. Item can only be shipped flat. Made by J.L. Goffart after Otto Eerelman. J.L. Goffart was a Belgian lithographer and printer active in Brussels c. 1900. The famous Dutch painter Otto Eerelman (1839-1926) was born in Groningen. He enjoyed his basic art education in Groningen. He was further educated in Paris and Brussels. At the end of the 19th c. he worked in the Hague and his fame grew, giving him large commissions including the Dutch Royal Family. His portret of the 8 year old later Queen Wilhelmina on her pony ‘Baby’ is well known. Otto Eerelman was productive. Initially he painted often historic themes, later he mostly painted animals. Dr. Eugene Quadekker was a military verterinarian and horse related author.

Condition: Very good, given age. Very good, given age. Sticker on reverse with title and name of publisher. Some foxing. General age related toning and small imperfections. Corners and paper edges ocassionaly a bit bumbed. Plate is slightly larger than the image shown as the image was stitched from 2 slightly smaller scans. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
