88. – This original antique print shows a statue of of a draped female looking at left, holding up her right arm. The statue is now in Beaconsfield in Buckinghamshire, property of Lord Burnham and is of an early imperial date. Restorations include the left hand and lower part of the garment with the feet as well as the right arm, and probably also the head. The etching shows the sculpture the right way round and was made after a drawing by Jacques de Gheyn III, which was in the possession of Jan Wtenbogaert in Amsterdam. Neither this drawing nor any intermediary drawings by De Bisschop have been traced. The statue is not included in the list of contents and locations, which means he did not know where it was. (ref: British Museum).

From: “Signorum veterum icones” by Jan de Bisschop (Joh. Episcopius ), published in 1668. It is a collection of Roman statues / sculptures of Roman gods, emperors, mythological figures, fauns etc. The plates in this work are engraved after his own drawings or after the drawings of Doncker, De Geyn, Dondyns, Matham, Ferreris and others.

Made by Jan de Bisschop after De Bisschop and others. Jan de Bisschop (1628-1671) was widely influential in art and art publishing. A lawyer by profession, he set up practice in The Hague around 1652 and later founded a drawing academy there. He mingled with an elite circle of intellectuals.

Condition: Good, given age. Small spot lower left. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
