DRAPED FEMALE STATUE-HYGEIA-PL.94 [Jan DE BISSCHOP, 1668]

Print

65.00

94. – This original antique print shows a statue of of a draped female, looking at left, both arms missing. Size, present state and whereabouts are unknown. This must have been a Roman work in which a Greek type of c. 400 B.C. had been adapted for a statue perhaps of ‘Hygeia’. The etching shows the sculpture in reverse and was made after a drawing by Jacques de Gheyn III, which was in the possession of Jan Wtenbogaert in Amsterdam. Neither this drawing nor any intermediary drawings by De Bisschop have been traced. The statue is not included in the list of contents and locations, which means he did not know where it was.
