Set of 9 engravings on 4 sheets, 1 very large engraving and 8 additional sheets of text about pronouciation etc. These very scarce original antique prints depict and describe the Chinese alphabet in the 17th century. Several text leaves with chines characters are included. The last engraving shows a Chinese man writing, on the floor a monkey that appears to be reading (!). A few leaves have engravings on both sides.

Engraving/etching on hand laid (verge) paper.
Sheet size: 24,5 x 37,5 cm. Image size: 21 x 16,5 cm.

From: ‘Toonneel van China (…)’, by Athanasius Kircherus (Kircher) ed. published in Amsterdam 1667.

Made by an anonymous engraver after Athanasius Kircher.

Condition: Very good, given age. Edges slightly browned. An occasional tiny spot. Large sheet has size of c.39x66cm. It has two large horizontal tears in the top part, which have been backed. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
