Plaat XIII. – This original antique print shows a catamaran sailing vessel in heavy weather off the coast of Kudda / Queda or Kedah in present day Malaysia. One of the men on board scoops water with a bucket, while the others manage the sails and rudder.

Copperplate engraving/etching on hand laid (verge) paper.
Sheet size: 14,8 x 20,2 cm. Image size: 12,5 x 15,8 cm.

From William Sewel’s Dutch translation of William Dampier’s travel logue: ‘Nieuwe Reistogt rondom de Wereld …’ (A New Voyage Round the World), published in Nijmegen by Isaac van Campen, 1771.

Made by Caspar Luyken after an anonymous artist. Engraver: Caspar Luyken / Luiken (based on monogram C.L. in some of the plates in the originating work). (1672-1708) was a Dutch engraver and draughtsman. He was the son and worked with Jan Luyken (1649-1712). He also worked for Christoph Weigel and Romeyn de Hooghe.

Condition: Very good, given age. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
