Etching on hand laid paper. Watermark: Fleur de Lis (French lily) in coat of arms, with WR = Laurentius 363, Wendelin Riehel, made in Strasbourg for use in The Hague. on paper.

Antique print, titled: ‘Intrede van zyn majesteit door de zeegeboog voor het Hof. ‘ – Entry of his majesty through the triumphal arch before the Court. A long procession of noblemen on horseback go through the triumphal arch erected at the entry of the Buitenhof in the Hague. William III travels in a carriage in the middle of the procession. Numerous spectators and armed escorts along the sides. Govard Bidloo: ‘Komste van zyne Majesteit Willem III. Koning van Groot Britanje, enz in Holland.’, The Hague: Arnout Leers (II), 1691. This elaborate book commemorate the 1691 visit of the Dutch Stadtholder and English King William III of Orange to The Hague. Romeyn de Hooghe participated in the planning of the decorations and recorded the festivities at their height in a brilliant series of etchings.Artists and Engravers: Made by ‘Romeyn de Hooghe’ after own design. Romeyn de Hooghe (bapt. 10 September 1645 – 10 June 1708) was an important and prolific late Dutch Baroque, painter, sculptor, engraver and caricaturist. De Hooghe was born in Amsterdam. He was skilled as an etcher, draughtsman, painter, sculptor and medalist. He is best known for political caricatures of Louis XIV and propagandistic prints supporting William of Orange. The Hieroglyphica of Merkbeelden der oude volkeren (1735) was a well known emblem book and sourcebook for classical mythology and its iconography. According to Houbraken he was particularly good at inventive arrangements of subjects in engravings.

Condition: Excellent, given age. Original middle fold, as issued. Tear in lower margin, reinforced using contemporary paper. Some tiny stains. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
