Allegorical title engraving: ‘Nymegen de oude hoofstad der Batavieren’ (Nijmegen the old capital of the Batavians.), showing the goddess Clio and the son of lady Latone in front of a bust of Claudius Civilis, the Batavian king surrounded by children in the holy forest near Nijmegen. In the foreground the Waal river god and in the background a profile of the city of Nijmegen and the Valkhof castle. This engraved plate originates from: ‘Nymegen, de oude hoofdstad der Batavieren, in dichtmaat beschreven, en met aantekeningen, de oudheden van de stad, en die van het quartier van Nymegen betreffende, opgeheldert Door H.K. Arkstee. Met printafbeeldingen.’, 1st ed. published by Petrus Mortier, Amsterdam, 1733. Later editions in 1738 and 1788. This is a description of the history, city and region of Nijmegen, The Netherlands.Artists and Engravers: Author: Hans Kasper Arkstee (Dutch, c. 1700-1776). Condition: Good. General age related toning and light staining. Narrow left margin from binding remargined for ease of handling. Please study scan.
