Plate: ‘Tiberias looking towards Hermon.’ (Tiberias is a city on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee, mount Hermon is a mountain in the Anti-Lebanon mountain range.) This scarse original old antique print / lithograph originates from: ‘The Life of Christ.’, by F.W. Farrar, published in 1874 by Cassell, Petter & Galpin, London, Paris & New York. Not all editions of this work appear to have incorporated these particular plates.Artists and Engravers: The author of this work is F.W. (Frederic) Farrar (1831-1903), at one time a minister in London’s famous Westminster Abbey and later Dean of Canterbury in England. The designer of the plates in this work is the reknown David Roberts (1796-1864) a Scottish painter. He is especially known for a great series of detailed prints of Egypt and the Near East that he produced during the 1840s from sketches he made during long tours of the region (1838-1840). This work, and his large oil paintings of similar subjects, made him a prominent Orientalist painter. He was elected as a Royal Academician in 1841. The printer of these plates is the firm of Vincent Brooks, Day & Son Ltd, a reknown London lithography and printing firm, and its founder and lithographer Vincent Brooks (1815-1885). We do not know the exact lithographer of these plates, which could be Roberts, his lithographer Louis Haghe (1806-1885) or Brooks. Anyone who can clarify this will be greatly appreciated.
