Original engraving, titled “de Nagt-Wagt des Tempels slapende gevonden” (the Temple’s night watch found sleeping). Showing, centrally, the sleeping watchman being woken by an angry man with flaming torch. Several other figures stand pointing, in the background. From: “Republyk der Hebreen of Gemeenebest der Joden” by Petrus Cunaeus, translated to Dutch by W. Goeree and published in 1682. Cunaeus Petrus was the pen name of the Dutch scholar Peter van der Kun (1586-1638). Kun studied at the University of Leyden and was later a professor at the same institution. It was there he was introduced to Rabbinic studies and Aramaic. The book for which he is best known and which was first published in 1617 is De Republica Hebraeorum, in which Kun describes the workings of the Israelite state during the First Temple period.Artists and Engravers: Artist and engraver unknown.
