Description
A “Tatar” warrior. Historically, the term Tatars (or Tartars) was applied to anyone originating from the vast Northern and Central Asian landmass then known as Tartary, a term which was also conflated with the Mongol Empire itself.
Made by Christoph Weigel the Elder after Caspar Luyken.
Medium: Etching / engraving on hand laid (verge) paper.
Sheet size: 18 x 21.5 cm (7.09 x 8.46 inch). Image size: 10.5 x 16 cm. (4.13 x 6.3 inch).
Condition: good, given age. Some staining in margins. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION
From “Neu-eroffnete Welt-Galleria… ‘ by Abraham de Santa Clara, published in Nuremberg, 1702.
Biography engraver: Johann Christoph Weigel, known as Christoph Weigel the Elder (1654-1725), was a German engraver, art dealer and publisher. He was born at Redwitz, Free imperial city of Eger in Egerland, and died in Nuremberg, aged 70.
Biography artist: Caspar Luyken (1672-1708) was a Dutch illustrator and engraver. He was the son of Jan Luyken with whom he collaborated extensively.
