Plate 19: ”De waereld is een speel toneel, elk speeld zyn rol en krygt zyn deel (J. Vondel).” (The world is a stage. everyone acts his part and gets his portion.) A caricature in prose and verse satirizing the disastrous Mississippi scheme (1718-1720) of the French Compagnie d”Occident and the speculations its stock that led to the complete ruin of many of its over-eager French, Dutch and English shareholders. On this plate the events are portrayed as a stage play with acts. Original engraved print from “Het Groote Tafereel der Dwaasheid, vertoonende de opkomst, voortgang en ondergang der Actie, Bubbel en Windnegotie, in Vrankryk, Engeland, en de Nederlanden, gepleegt in den Jaare MDCCXX �”, Amsterdam, 1720. (The Great Mirror of Folly, which is actually a collection on all printsmaps and text, published in 1720, satirizing the Englishman John Law, his Mississippi Company, and the international land and trading speculation in worthless shares of the South Sea Bubble of 1719-1720, which resulted in an international scandal.Artists and Engravers: Unknown.

Condition: Very good, given its age. Original middle fold as issued. Light crease in left top margin. General age-related toning and occasional light stains from handling. Please study image carefully.
