Biography engraver: Jacob Ernst Marcus (1774-1826) was a Dutch engraver, painter, and lithographer born in Sint Eustatius, a small Caribbean island under Dutch rule. He studied engraving under Reinier Vinkeles and became a leading Dutch book illustrator. His work often depicted daily life, portraits, and topographical scenes. He co-founded Kunst Zij Ons Doel (Art Be Our Purpose) in 1801, a prominent Dutch art society. His engravings, including this lively depiction of a Russian fair, showcase a deep interest in social and cultural history.
Biography artist: Herman Fock (1766-1822) was a Dutch painter, draughtsman, and printmaker active in Amsterdam. He specialized in historical and everyday life scenes, often collaborating with engravers like Marcus. His work captures detailed urban settings and human expressions, making him a key figure in early 19th-century Dutch printmaking.
