Description
This original antique print shows the island of Amsterdam and St. Paul, subantarctic volcanic islands in the southern Indian Ocean, located approximately 80 km from each other. Among the most remote islands in the world, Amsterdam and Saint-Paul are more than 3,000 km from any continent, situated between Antarctica, Africa, and Australia. BACKGROUND INFORMATION
This attractive print was published in 1758 by De Hondt, The Hague. Early engravings from Antoine Francois Prevost: Histoire Generale des Voyages. Vol. 16. These are illustrations were previously published by Francois Valentijn in 1726.
Biography engraver: Jakob van der Schley (1715-1779) was a Dutch draughtsman and engraver, who mostly did portrait engravings and frontispieces for books throughout his career.
