De onschuldige SOCRATES drinkt den giftbeker in de hoop van een beter leven.’ – This print shows Socrates sitting on a bed, with loose chains next to him, waiting to drink the poison cup, being prepaired in the background by a man. Around Socrates we see three man talking to him. In the Dutch text it is said he will drink the cup hoping for a better life.

This attractive print was published in the 18th century.

Made by ‘Reinier Vinkeles’ after ‘Bernard Rode’. Reinier Vinkeles (Amsterdam. 1741-1816), was an 18th-century painter and engraver from the Northern Netherlands, who was the later teacher of several talented artists. He studied for some ten years with Jan Punt and joined the Amsterdam Stadstekenacademie.

Condition: Good, given age. Smudges in the margin. Reverse remains of glue. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
