Antique print, titled: ‘Chaloupe d’un grand vaisseau.’ – The sloop of a large sailing ship with rowers, guide and trumpeter. From: “L’ Art de batir les vaisseaux et d’ en perfectionner la construction (…) le tout tire des meilleurs auteurs Hollandois, comme Witsen, van Eyk, Allard, etc.”, published by David Mortier, Amsterdam 1718-1719. 2 Volumes in one. This scarse work is known as ‘l’Allard Francais’ and is in fact a compilation of works by Dutch authors (Nicolaes Witsen, Cornelis van Eyk, Carel Allard) and a very practical and important document of ship building at the time. Ref: Polak 9643.Artists and Engravers: Made by ‘Publisher: David Mortier’ after an anonymous artist. Publisher: David Mortier (1673-1728) was a Dutch printer/publisher/merchant from Amsterdam of French Huguenot descent. In 1696 he got naturalized in England. He was the brother of Pieter/Pierre Mortier (1661-1711). Both were active in Paris and Pieter ran a publishing house in Amsterdam. After Pieter’s death David returned to Amsterdam periodically from 1711-21 and helped the widow of his brother and Pieter’s son Cornelius who ultimately took over the business.

Condition: Good, given age. Small stain in top of print, just below text. Printer’s crease in right margin. Remains of paper from previous attachment on rear. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
