‘HET WOORD DES EEUWIGEN LEVENS IS VAN GODDELIJKEN OORSPRONG.’

– (The word of eternal life is of divine origin.) This early crayon-style lithograph is a highly detailed and ornate print containing a variety of elements, reminiscent of Baroque style, which is characterized by its intricate detail, grandeur, and a sense of movement.

At the top right of the print, there is a coat of arms with the inscription “Huds-wapen” flanking a central scene. The coat of arms contains a swan and is topped with a crown, which may signify nobility or royalty. On the left is an owl with the inscription ‘La vraie sagesse ne s’ondort jamais’ which translates to ‘True wisdom never sleeps.’ Between these, a putti, or cherubic figure, is holding an open book while floating amongst clouds, suggesting a heavenly or intellectual theme.

Directly below this central scene is a large, blank cartouche supported by festoons of fabric, which could be used for a title or dedication.

The lower section of the print features a variety of objects on a shelf, which could be allegorical. From left to right, there is a cherub with yet another open book, a candle, a celestial globe representing astronomy or navigation, and a compass. To the right of these, there are two bugles and a lyre, symbolizing music, and an angle ruler. Finally, two cherubs pondering over a text.

This print is likely intended as a blank sheet to be completed with manuscript additions celebrating a special ocasion. The inclusion of the coats of arms suggests that it may have been commissioned by or dedicated to a person or family of noble standing. The blank cartouche provides space for further customization or personalization. The entire composition reflects a celebration of knowledge, wisdom, and the arts, consistent with Baroque allegorical artwork.
