Description

Copperplate engraving/etching on hand laid (verge) paper.
Sheet size: 20,5 x 32,8 cm. (8,1 x 12,9 inch). Image size: 17,5 x 28,8 cm. (6,9 x 11,3 inch).

From the monumental work by François Valentyn: “Oud en nieuw Oost-Indiën, vervattende een naaukeurige en uitvoerige verhandelinge van Nederlands mogentheyd in die gewesten”. Dordrecht/Amsterdam: J. van Braam en G. onder de Linden, 1724/1726. (Transl.: Old and new East-Indies, including an accurate and extensive description of Dutch / VOC controlled territories.) We have a list available with Indonesian names of these fish species.

Made by an anonymous engraver after Francois Valentijn / VOC sources. These plates were engraved by various engravers (H.F. Diamaer, J. Goeree and I.C. Philips) after the drawings by M. Balen after Rumphius. Jorg Eberhardt (Georg Everhard) Rumph (Hanau, Germany, 1628-1702) was in the service of the Dutch East-India Company (VOC) and was settled on the isle of Ambon. He wrote about his observations and made drawings, but the greater part of his manuscripts and all his drawings got lost. He became blind in 1670, but worked on, by help of an assistant. Happily enough was part of his manuscripts copied. Rumphius became a member of the German ‘Academia Naturae Curiosum’ and was honourably named ‘Plinius Indicus’.

Condition: Good, given age. Slight discoloration of paper. Light foxing. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
