BACKGROUND INFORMATION
The nieuwe Schouburg der Nederlantsche Kunstschilders en Schilderessen is a book (two parts) with artist biographies, written by Jan van Gool, published in The Hague 1750-1751.
(The Hague, 1750). This book was intended as an update of the original “Schouwburg” written by Arnold Houbraken with whom he was friends. The three-part Schouburg is organized by year of birth, ending with Adriaen van der Werff, born in 1659. Like Houbraken before him, he begins his book with a tribute to his predecessors, especially Karel van Mander and to Houbraken himself, but he notes that Houbraken included several insulting comments in his text that he believed were unnecessary. He starts with artists that Houbraken left out. He starts with two painters from The Hague, Jan van Ravensteyn and Adriaen Hanneman. He then wrote short sketches in order of year of birth until 1680, and part I ends with Gerard Jan Palthe. Part II continues from 1680 with Jan van Huysum and concludes in 1700 with the brothers Bernard and Matthijs Accama.
Biography engraver: Jacobus Houbraken (1698-1780) was a Dutch engraver, etcher and collector and the son of the artist and biographer Arnold Houbraken.
Biography artist: Aert Schouman or Aart Schouman (1710-1792) was an 18th-century painter, now better known as a glass engraver, from the Dutch Republic.
