BACKGROUND INFORMATION
This engraving was executed by Pieter de Jode II after a design by Pierre Aubry, and it dates from after 1643, following Louis XIV’s ascension to the throne. The composition is framed with heraldic emblems, burning torches, and trumpets, enhancing the monarch’s majesty.
Biography engraver: Pieter de Jode II or Pieter de Jode the Younger (1606-1674) was a Flemish Baroque printmaker, draughtsman, painter and art dealer. A scion of an important dynasty of printmakers active in Antwerp, he created many prints after the works of leading painters and was a close collaborator of Anthony van Dyck for whom he engraved many portraits.
Biography artist: Pierre Aubry (1610-1686) was a French painter and engraver active in the 17th century, known for his portraits and historical scenes. His work was often used as a model for engravings, particularly in depicting European royalty.
