Published by Robert Sayer (1725-1794), London, c. 1755-65. John McArdell made a similar mezzotint engraving after Ramsay, after which this version is probably modelled. Not fully described. Inquire for additional information. Can be sold seperately on request.

Made by C. Corbutt = R. Purcell after Allan Ramsay. Charles Corbutt is an alias for Richard Purcell (c.1736-c.1766). Richard Purcell (1736 – 1766) was a native of Dublin and a pupil of John Brooks. After Brooks went to London in 1746, Purcell remained in Dublin for some time, working for the print-sellers and probably assisting Andrew Miller. Of his work done in Dublin twelve mezzotints are known, most of them signed R. Purcelle. Many of his prints are signed Chas. Corbutt, or C. Corbutt, an alias he adopted to hide his identity on account of his pecuniary embarrassments. Allan Ramsay (1713-1784) worked as a excellent portrait painter. He made several trips to Italy and after the crippling of his right arm started writing.
