PORTRAIT-LIEVEN VAN DER BEKEN-TORRENTIUS | BOX-PORTRAITS-1 (SERIE 1)

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

From a unidentified series of portraits, published between 1567 and 1608 in several editions and varying content, mostly covering humanists. Later in the 17th.c. individual plates were published as well. The largest part of the plates were published as part of ‘Bibliotheca Belgica’ by J.F. Foppens in 1739. Based in the paper these plate can surely be dated 17th.c. or earlier.

Biography engraver: Philips Galle (1537-1612) was a prominent Netherlandish engraver and publisher based in Haarlem and later Antwerp. He produced reproductive engravings after both Italian and Northern artists and ran a prolific publishing house.
