Medium: Etching in sepia on hand-laid (verge) paper.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

After a set of drawings first owned by the English consul in Venice, later added to the collection of the English King. Published in London in 1764 by the Royal Printer, commissioned by the English King.

State: Early state.

Biography engraver: Francesco Bartolozzi (1728-1815) was a prolific Italian engraver, known for his stipple engravings and delicate etching techniques. Active in London for most of his career, Bartolozzi was appointed as “Engraver to the King” in 1764.

Biography artist: Giovanni Guercino (1591-1666), a Baroque painter from Cento, Italy, was renowned for his dynamic compositions, rich use of color, and expressive drawings. Many of his works were translated into prints by later artists like Bartolozzi.
