Original antique print showing a portrait of Pierre Gassendi, also Pierre Gassend, Petrus Gassendi; (1592 – 1655), a French philosopher, Catholic priest, astronomer, and mathematician.
Made by Claude Mellan after own design.
Medium: Engraving on hand laid (verge) paper.
Sheet size: 12.2 x 16.7 cm (4.8 x 6.57 inch). Image size: 10.3 x 14.2 cm. (4.06 x 5.59 inch).
Condition: good, given age. A few minor spots. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Published in France c. 1660.
Biography engraver: Claude Mellan d’Abbeville (1598-1688) was a French painter, drafsman, etcher and engraver. He was active in Paris and later became court engraver. He invented a new way of use of the echoppe-etching needle . His prints show a high quality of linework.
