Medium: Engraving/etching on hand laid (verge) paper. Watermark: small coat of arrms (present on some sheets).

Sheet size: 20 x 30.5 cm (7.87 x 12.01 inch). Image size: 17.5 x 26 cm. (6.89 x 10.24 inch).

Condition: fair, given age. Paper browned. Some staining/ foxing. Some crinkles or minor creases. Small tear in top margin. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

From Hugo de Groot’s ‘Nederlandtsche Jaerboeken en Historien,’ published in 1681 by Joannes van Someren and others in Amsterdam. These portraits are also to be found in othert sources and editions : P.C. Hooft, Bor, or Jean Le Clerc. Published between 1670 and 1730.

Biography engraver: Engraver unknown/to be determined.

Biography artist: Hugo Grotius (1583- 1645), also known as Huig de Groot, Hugo Grocio or Hugo de Groot, was a jurist in the Dutch Republic. With Francisco de Vitoria and Alberico Gentili he laid the foundations for international law, based on natural law. He was also a philosopher, theologian, Christian apologist, playwright, and poet.
