BACKGROUND INFORMATION
From ‘Payne’s Universum, or, Pictorial World’, published ca. 1850.
Biography engraver: Edward John Roberts (1797-1865). Antoine Watteau (1684-1721) was a French painter whose career spurned the revival of interest in colour and movement, and is credited with moving the Baroque style into the less classical Rococo. His most famous paintings are so-called Fetes-Galantes, scenes of bucolic and idyllic charm combined with an air of theatricality.
