From: ‘Java. Tooneelen uit het leven karakterschetsen en kleederdragten van Java’s bewoners in afbeeldingen naar de natuur geteekend’ by E. Hardouin and text by W. L. Ritter, published in Leiden, The Netherlands 1855. This is the rare first original hand coloured edition. One of the best-illustrated works on Java and the Javanese of the 19th-century. The plates were printed by Lemercier in Paris. Ref: Bastin and Brommer, 301; Haks and Maris, p. 112; Landwehr, 301

Made by E. Hardouin after own design. Ernest Alfred Hardouin (French; born 1820) did not live to see the work published – he died in Batavia in 1853 (or Januaty 1854, as stated by Haks and Maris). Author: Wilhelm Leonard Ritter (1799-1862) travelled widely across the Malayan Archipelago and is regarded as one of the most prolific 19th-century writers on the Dutch East Indies.

Condition: Good, given age. Some foxing, mainly visible outside the image. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
