‘INWOONERS VAN NORTON-KANAAL EN HUNNE WOONINGEN.’

– Depiction of native inhabitants of Norton Sound (Alaska) with their traditional dwellings. In the foreground, a man wearing a fur-lined coat stands beside a woman carrying a child on her back. Their thatched-roof dwelling is visible in the background, along with a wooden kayak on the shore. This scene was originally documented during Captain Cook’s third voyage and later adapted for the Dutch edition of his travels.

Condition: good, given age. Light foxing, creasing and soiling. Small tear in top paper edge. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Reize rondom de Waereld door James Cook, Dutch edition, published by Honcoop, Allart, and Van Cleef (1795-1797). Based on earlier engravings published in Anderson’s large folio edition of Captain Cook’s Voyages (1784).

Biography engraver: Joseph Sebastian Klauber (1710-1768) was a German miniaturist and engraver from Augsburg, primarily known for religious engravings. He was a pupil of Antoine Birckhaert in Prague. His work for Reize rondom de Waereld adapted illustrations from Cook’s voyages for the Dutch edition.

Biography artist: The original drawing was created during Captain Cook’s third voyage (1776-1779), documenting the indigenous people of Alaska and their way of life. The engravings were based on eyewitness sketches made by members of the expedition.
