Copperplate engraving on verge type hand laid paper with watermark (not visible on all sheets). on paper.

Size in cm: The overall size is ca. 20.5 x 17 cm. The image size is ca. 17.5 x 13 cm. Size in inch: The overall size is ca. 8.1 x 6.7 inch. The image size is ca. 6.9 x 5.1 inch.

The natives of the Grain Coast ( Greyn Kust ) and their habits: dress, clothing, cannibalism, devil worship and music. This land was later called the Pepper Coast ( Peper Kust ), because spices were grown here and used by the natives. Rare engraving from: “Naauwkeurige versameling der gedenk-waardigste Zee en Land-reysen, na Oost en West-Indien . . . “, published in Leiden, the Netherlands by Pieter van der Aa in 1707. This particular print is from part of this book: “Ongelukkige Schipbreuk en Yslyke Reystogt van etlyke Engelschen, in de jaare 1696 van Jamaika in West-Indiën, na Pennsylvania . . .”, by Jonathan Dickens, W. Sewel.Artists and Engravers: Unknown, possibly Caspar Luyken (Luiken).

Condition: Fine. Original fold lines as issued. occasional age related staining as visible on scans. top and/or bottom of fold lines ocassionaly torn slightly, but not eaffecting the image.
