BACKGROUND INFORMATION
From: “Recueil des Figures, Groupes, Thermes, Fontaines, Vases, Statues, et Autres Ornemens de Versailles” by Simon Thomassin. The book was published between 1694 and 1724 by Simon Thomassin in Paris (1694), Pierre Mortier in Amsterdam (1695) and Rutgert Alberts in The Hague (1724).
Biography engraver: Simon Thomassin (1655-1733) was a French royal engraver known for documenting the sculpture and decoration of Versailles. His series are valued for their precision and elegance.
Biography artist: Based on a statue by Nicolas Poussin (1594-1665), a leading painter of the classical French Baroque style, although he spent most of his working life in Rome.
