Condition: good, given age. Plate trimmed and attached to a decorative carrier with hand drawn linework. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Frontispiece for “Remarkable Views of the Mountains of Switzerland” (Vues Remarquables des Montagnes de la Suisse), by Jacob Samel Wyttenbach (1748-1830), published 1780-1782.

Biography engraver: Charles Monnet (1732-1808) was a French painter and engraver known for his allegorical and historical works. He was active during the late 18th century and early 19th century, contributing to various artistic projects, including book illustrations and prints. Monnet’s work often featured detailed and symbolic compositions that reflected the cultural and political sentiments of his time. His frontispiece for “Remarkable Views of the Mountains of Switzerland” is a fine example of his ability to blend allegory with landscape.
