Print Description
Original antique optical print showing the courtyard of the monastry Escurial in Spain. This is an optical print, also called ‘vue optique’ or ‘vue d’optique’, which were made to be viewed through a Zograscope, or other devices of convex lens and mirrors, all of which produced an optical illusion of depth.
Made by an anonymous engraver after Daumont.
Medium: Engraving / etching with original old hand colouring on hand laid (verge) paper.
Sheet size: 43.8 x 27.8 cm (17.24 x 10.94 inch). Image size: 38.5 x 23 cm. (15.16 x 9.06 inch).
Condition: fair, given age. Mounted on board and paper. Cuts in windows for visual effects. Paper with title on verso. Black painted edges. Creasess. Hole in lower left corner. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Published by Jean Francois Daumont, Paris, c. 1770.
Biography artist: Daumont was a well-known publisher of optical prints, established in Paris. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries there were many popular speciality establishments in Paris, Augsburg and London which produced optical viewing devices and special engravings to be viewed through them.
