Sheet size: 20 x 26,5 cm. (7,9 x 10,4 inch). Image size: 17,5 x 22,5 cm. (6,9 x 8,9 inch).

This print was published in Friedrich Justin Bertuch’s (1747-1822) Picture book for children (Bilderbuch f?r Kinder) (vol. 1, plate 8), which was published in Weimar between 1790 and 1830 in 12 volumes. The work contains 1185 colored plates, with a total of about 6000 individual engravings, which were mainly made by teachers, students and graduates of the Princely Free Drawing School in Weimar.

Made by ‘Jacob Xaver Schmuzer’ after ‘various sources’. Jacob Xaver Schmuzer (1713-1775) was a German copper engraver particularly noted for his illustrating “Unterhaltungen aus der Naturgeschichte” (‘Discourse on Natural History’), the monumental multi-volume work of the Bavarian clergyman and naturalist from Augsburg, Gottlieb Tobias Wilhelm (1758-1822).

Condition: good, given age. Remains of tape in the corners, stains in corner where the pages has been turned over, brownish upper and lower edges, holes from binding in right margin. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
