This print shows a view on the adoration of the Magi. They are presenting their gifts to christ. One of a set of 12 on sin and its expiation: “The sin and penance of man.”
Made by Jean Baptiste Barbe after Maarten de Vos.
Medium: Engraving / etching on handlaid (verge) paper. Watermark: A. van Santen.
Sheet size: 24 x 26.6 cm (9.45 x 10.47 inch). Image size: 11 x 16 cm. (4.33 x 6.3 inch).
Condition: good, given age. Brownish. Creases. Smudges. Small holes from binding. Double fold because of binding. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION
This attractive print was first published 1585 in ‘Thesaurus sacrarum historiaru[m] veteris (et novi) testame[n]ti, elega[n]tissimis imaginibus expressu[m] excelle[n]tissimoru[m] in hac arte viroru[m] opera: nu[n]c primu[m] in luce[m] editus’, by Gerard de Jode in Antwerp. This is a later ed., ca 1750.
Biography engraver: Jean Baptiste Barbe (Antwerp, 1578-1649) was active in Antwerp during the late 16th and early 17th-centuries. He was a pupil of Philips Galle. He became a Master in 1610 and engraved works after Rubens, de Vos and others.
