Description

Handcoloured engraving on hand laid (verge) paper. Watermark: fragment on some sheets of French Lily in coat of arms. on paper.

Antique print, titled: ”Muscarum atque Culicum. Tab. V-VIII.” – This image shows: Tab V: ”De lange, bruine en donkergestreepte Water-Made, benevens haare Verandering in eene veel kleine Vlieg” (The long, brown and dark-striped Water-Maggot, or Rat-tailed maggots, the larvae of certain hoverfly species). The image shows two larvae and the hoverfly. Tab VI: ”De bleek-Okerkoleurige Blad-Made, benevens haare Verandering in eene geele Vlieg” (The pale, ochre-coloured leaf maggot and its metamorphosis into a yellow fly). Tab. VII: ”De kleine, graauwachtige Mest- en Aard-Made, benevens haare Verandering in eene Vlieg” (The small, grayish Manure- and Earth maggot, and its metamorphosis ito a fly). Tab VIII: ”De kleine, geelachtig-witte Made, benevens haare Verandering in eene Vlieg” (The small, yellowish-white maggot, and its metamorphosis into a fly). From R?sel von Rosenhof’s: ‘Monatlich- Herausgegeben Insecten Belustigung.’, published 1746-1749. This work is considered the finest German work on Insects. The plates are identical to a later Dutch ed.: “De Natuurlyke Historie der Insecten [?]” with commentary and text for written by C.F.C. Kleemann. Haarlem and Amsterdam: C.H. Bohn and H. Gartman, 1765-1782. Artists and Engravers: Made by ‘A.J. Rosel van Rosenhof’ after own design. Augustus Johannes Rosel von Rosenhof (1705-59) was a German miniature painter, and naturalist and entomologist. Roesel studied painting with his father and uncle, and later with the renowned Preisler in Nuremberg. While living in Copenhagen, he became inspired by the work of Maria Sibylla Merian. He returned to Nuremberg to devote himself largely to entomological studies and illustration, aided by his wife who hand colored his drawings and his son in law, who assisted in the publishing of his superbly illustrated scientific works. Roesel also did much of the engraving for his works.

Condition: Very good, given age. Some faint soiling and/or staining in the margin edges. Image faintly browned. Faint offsetting from the text on the opposite page. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
