Description
(The queen of the lime tree) Portrait Madame Girard-Machioletti. Francoise Valnois (called Marie-Francoise Machioletti in an 1850 court document and Femme Girard nee Machioletti in her memoirs), born in Macon on August 14, 1797 is a lemonade maker who worked in Lyon in the nineteenth century. She is known as “Madame Girard” or “Widow Girard”, after her husband. She was nicknamed “the Queen of the Lime Trees” because of the counter she ran in Lyon on Place Bellecour, renowned at the time for its many lime trees.
