Made by ‘Johannes Sadeler’ after ‘Maarten de Vos’. Johannes Sadeler I (1550-ca. 1600) was a member of the engravers family Sadeler. The Sadeler family were the largest, and probably the most successful of the dynasties of Flemish engravers that were dominant in Northern European printmaking in the later 16th and 17th centuries, as both artists and publishers. The Sadelers were descended from “chasers,” engravers of armour, from Aalst. Maarten de Vos (1532-1603) was an Antwerp painter and draughtsman of the late sixteenth century. His travels to Italy made him adopt the Mannerist style. His designs were very popular and were followed widely.
