‘LINDEN-LOOF EN ZAAD. / BERKEN-LOOF.’

– (Foliage of the linden tree and seed. Foliage of the birch tree.) This botanical engraving depicts two different tree species shown with scientific clarity. On the left, linden leaves and seeds (Linden-loof en zaad) are illustrated, including a characteristic bract with clustered seed pods. On the right, birch leaves (Berken-loof) are shown attached to slender twigs.

Biography artist: Noel-Antoine Pluche (1688-1761), known as the Abbe Pluche, was a French priest. He is now known for his Spectacle de la nature, a most popular work of natural history.
