BACKGROUND INFORMATION
“Galerie du Palais Royal …”, Paris: J. Couche & J. Bouilliard, [n.d., 1786-1808]. This series of plates depict the collection of the Royal Palace in Paris. Each plate is set in a decorative border and accompanied by a descriptive text (by l’Abbe de Fontenal), describing the artist and painting. The author Jacques Couche (1759-1836), was a French engraver, student of Levasseur.
Biography engraver: Francois Dequevauviller (1745-1807) was a French engraver, printer, publisher and printmaker. .
Biography artist: Jan Breughel the Elder (1568-1625) was a Flemish painter/draughtsman.
