Made by Isaac de Wit Jansz after Jacob Cats. Isaac de Wit Jansz. (1744-1809) was an engraver active in Amsterdam and Haarlem. He worked together with J. P. Visser Bender. Jacob Cats (1741- 1799) was a Dutch painter, draughtsman and etcher. However, he was born in Altona, Germany. As his father was a Mennonite bookseller who had to flee Amsterdam because of a controversial publication. Few years later the family returned tp Amsterdam, where Cats studied under Abraham Starre and Pieter Louw. Cats was acclaimed for drawing townscapes and landscapes with realitically rendered persons and animals, his works having a distinct originality, and being marked by a poetical rendering of the features of nature, as well as by careful manipulation.
