Antique print, titled: ”Portus Pontis nigri.” – A harbour at the Black Sea. Possibly depicting Istanbul and the entrance to the Black sea / Hellespont. Originally published ca. 1580. Later state with the adress of Joannes Galle, printed around 1650. State: Third state of 3. Ref: Hollstein 21.Artists and Engravers: Made by an anonymous engraver after ‘Hendrick van Cleve’. Hendrick / Hendrik van Cleve III (Antwerp, ca. 1525 – between 1590 and 1595) was a Flemish painter and engraver. He was the son and pupil of Willem van Cleve the Elder, and the elder brother of Marten van Cleve the Elder and of Willem Van Cleve the Younger.
Condition: Good, given age. Thread margins, restored tear lower right corner. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
